A Shiny thread for all things Firefly& Serenity Ok, last week I bought the movie Serenity on dvd. It is an absolutley brilliant film and a friend has since lent me the boxset of the show it's based on, Firefly.
The series and the film tell the tale of the crew of the spaceship Serenity. A group of mercenaries who are trying to survive and make some money in a galaxy ruled by the Alliance, a totalirian government.
The crew are; Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a former soldier from the losing side of a war against the Alliance; Zoe, Mals second in command and former allie from the war; Wash is Serenities pilot and Zoes husband;Jayne Cobb, the hired muscle of the outfit; Kayleigh, is the young mmechanic of the crew; Irana, a 'companion', basically a high class prostitute who allows Serenities crew access to high society; Simon Tam, a young doctor who is on the run from the alliance after rescuing his sister River Tam, a mysterious young genius who has been driven insane by the cruel experiments of the Alliance; Shepard Book, a preacher with a mysterious past.
The idea behind the show is to be a sci-fi western, with intergalactic colonies representing the wild frontier of the old west. The show was cruelly axed by Fox after just on season of which they only screened 11 episodes.

"I don't believe there's a power in the 'verse that can stop Kaylee being cheerful."
"I love my captain"
Kaylee honey, you ain't the only one!
Man I loved this series! I have it on DVD and really need to watch it all again. I loved it, absolutely fell in love with all the characters. Didn't hurt that Nathan Fillion isn't averse to losing his clothes occasionally has to be said.
Definitely a shiny thread Bobatim!

It is a brilliant show, I've only seen ten episodes so far, but it has so much heart it's infectious. My fave character is Mal, he has a wicked sense of humour. My crush is on Kaylee, she's v.fine.
Fave line so far "If anybody tries to kill you, you try and kill them right back''
Also it has the best theme tune of any scifi show ever!

Kaylee is so cute! She's just adorable.
It's hard to find a bad character in the set really. I adore Jayne. He's just brilliant. So utterly mercenary, or would love to be if he wasn't so devoted to Mal and Zoe.
Bobatim- 02-13-2008
I have to say if there is a weak character in the show, for me, it's Zoe. Shes pretty much generic best friend/ first officer type of character. However her scenes with Wash are always good.

I want to get a hat like Jaynes
Hows it sit? Pretty cunning dontcha think?
Jayne is by far and away my favourite character:
"I'll kill a man in a fair fight, or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight… If he bothers me, or if there's a woman… Or if I'm gettin' paid. Mostly only when I'm gettin' paid"
"You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with 'til you understand who's in ruttin' command here."
"What'd y'all order a dead guy for?"
With lines like that, how can you not love him?

I think Jaynestown is one of my favourite episodes.
The Ballad of Jayne
Jayne, the man they call Jayne
He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne
Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'
He saw the mudders' lament
And he saw the magistrate takin'
Every dollar and leavin' five cents
So he said "you can't do that to my people"
He said "you can't crush them under your heel"
So Jayne strapped on his hat
And in 5 seconds flat
Stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal
He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne
Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit sky
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
The man they called Jayne
He stole away our pain
And headed out for the stars
He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne.
I resisted watching Firefly for a long time as, for some reason, I was worried I wouldn't like it. I think Joss Whedon is a genius and Buffy is my favourite programme ever and I didn't want to spoil that. Then shortly before Serenity came out I watched the whole series in one day. I wasn't too sure after the 1st episode but by ep 3 I was hooked. I've since indoctrinated 4 other people to the Browncoat life and have 2 editions of Serenity on DVD. I will never doubt Joss again!

I also resisted watching it, because I hate Buffy and never seen Angel. I thought that it being made by the creator was a very bad sign. For once, I was v.happy to be proven wrong.

Love this show - you say you've only watched 10 episodes - that's most of it. Firefly has to be the most unfairly cancelled programme ever. I much prefer the series over the film, although the film is excellent and provides the much-needed resolution denied the series because of the afore-mentioned cancellation.
Bobatim- 02-14-2008
I've since watched another two episodes Homer, watching the last two tonight.
I've heard a lot of people say that they prefer the series to the film, but I have to say I rate them pretty much evenly. Having said that, I do think that the film certainly enhances the brilliance of the series.
Out of interest, has anybody round these parts read the comicbook miniseries? and do you know where I can get it?I've heard it's available as a graphic novel but can't track that down either
PrincessAura- 02-14-2008
Absolutely unfairly cancelled, but by way of revenge, we in the UK got the last three episodes aired where the US didn't. Har de har har.
