Books everyone should read

Man! There are a lot of good suggestions on here. Here's a book that I think everyone (and I mean everyone) should read.

I would question that this is a book that everybody has to read. It seems a pretty pointless book to me. Atheists read it to confirm everything they believe. Christian fundamentalists condemn it out right. And the rest of us think...who gives a shit believe what you want to. That may seem a little harsh but I have yet to encounter a non athesit who has read this book. Not picking you out Jimbob but I have a degree of faith and quite a few people have tried to get me to read it.

A blistering fantasy series that is perfect in every way.

A phenomenally epic science-fiction series that is, essentially, one big story. For sci-fi fans, it's a series you have to read.

Still, I don't see that it's any less worthy a choice than some of the fiction/fantasy novels in here. This thread could just as easily be called "My Very Favourite Books". In defence of The God Delusion I would say that while it didn't really change my beliefs it did turn me on to ideas I hadn't previous considered, and I found it educational, enlightening and entertaining in equal measure. However, it's my new rule not to argue/debate about religion/spirituality online. I did enough of that on the EMPIRE forum and it was pointless and boring. :-| Don't worry, I don't feel picked on.
