Censorship, alive and kicking in Wales...
Okay, I just saw this story in the local rag this morning and I felt I need to share it. Really couldn't believe it.

Cuchulainn- 07-26-2008

That's crazy.Especially when you consider you can walk into any video store and buy the damn thing for a fiver... I'm sure half the population of Aberystwyth own the dvd...

As a firm opposer of censorship, I found this news enfuriating and anachronistic. "I have not seen the film, nor have I any wish to do so." How hypocritical... I hope the Aberystwyth Council have the common sense to lift the ban.

Bubba- 07-26-2008

You think they would, guess it all depends with how much pull the church have in the town.

Donald McKinney- 07-26-2008

Stupid reverend!! Anyone who opposes this film by calling it blasphemous deserves to be executed!! It's not blasphemous, it's just a bit of childish heresy. :P I didn't know town councils still had the power to ban stuff, plus this was NOTHING compared to the outrage it caused in America, it was banned all down the Bible Belt, and there were death threats on the Pythons!! It's stuff like this that makes me ashamed to be a Christian.

Oh for goodness' sake, I wish these people would just wise up! If he doesn't want to ever see it, fine. If he would like to make his opinion known that other people shouldn't watch it either, then that's fine too. However that's as far as it goes, he has no right to interfere to stop the council revoking this ban. The various churches try to have way much influence in matters like these; I see it all the time here in N.I.

Bubba- 07-26-2008

No offence Nomi, but I'd kind of expect stuff like this in NI and Ireland, as both countries have a history of strong religious influence. That really isn't the case over here. The fact that the film was banned in town when it came out shocked me itself, that the ban is still in effect is completely ridculous. But then to be fair having never seen it (and not for any reason other than I just haven't) I can't really judge on the content.

No wonder my Judith Iscariot text fell on deaf ears...

Reminds of the Father Ted Episode The Passion Of St Tibulus The local cinema is showing a film condemned by the Church for its X-rated and blasphemous depiction of St Tibulus. Bishop Brennan is dispatched to the island to ensure that the priests take to the picket line in pro-*test*-('"). But their defiant stand only gives more publicity to the film, which becomes an overnight success. It is left to Father Jack to stop the Bishop from sending them packing.

Sorry babe. Not seen any Python stuff bar for the odd clip on tv.

In my head I was meaning that I see it all the time over here but that this place is at least 30 years behind the times, so to find such nonsense in Aber is really quite puzzling.

Bubba- 07-26-2008

It's insane. I'm sure the paper will be filled with letters about it next week.

Donald McKinney- 07-26-2008

Sorry babe. Not seen any Python stuff bar for the odd clip on tv. Bubbs, you will go out and buy it on DVD!! That's an order!! Why?? forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=102>Because I say so!! ;)

PrincessAura- 07-27-2008

There's always been the intention to do a Python marathon whenever Bubba comes to stay with me, it just doesn't happen for one reason or another. As for this ban not being lifted in Aber, much as I hate to say it, I'm not that surprised. For all that Aber has been brought kicking and screaming into the 21st century by the amount of students that go there, it's still a fairly inhibited town. Let's not forget, the place still doesn't have a Marks & Spencers for crying out loud! It's the same with a lot of places that have been allowed to continue to carry on their own way because they're smallish towns that have a Parish Council that are involved with running it. Aberystwyth Uni had a fetish night while I was at uni in Lampeter, needless to say Aber uni has only ever had one fetish night. No more were allowed after that and it was a very vanilla affair anyway.

Let's not forget, the place still doesn't have a Marks & Spencers for crying out loud! Does this signify progress and enlightenment in some way? :D
