Let me explain and elucidate on what I mean by this. I mean people who write books that you know may not have fantastic insights, or life changing meaning but are just fantastic to just scoff down. I am not denigrating these writers talent by the way. Leslie Thomas - Perfect example of this type of author for me. I can remember hardly a thing about the books of his I have read and I hav read a few of them. But by thunder the man can spin a yarn. Always enjoyable. Alexander McCall Smith - Particularly the Ladies Detective Agency novels. I can eat them up in a couple of sittings. They are marvellous but I doubt I would ever read any of them a second time. Ian Rankin - I know he tries deserately hard to put a political message into his books. But I am always thinking 'just shut up and stick to the mystery'. When he does that he is fantastic. PG Wodehouse - I hesitate to put him in here as he is such a supreme craftsman and one of the best writers of his generation. But I have to admit after reading a heavy book. I do love to reel off a quick Jeeves and Wooster or a Psmith or a Blandings novel.

I know what you mean. Those kind of books that are basically literary brain candy. To be honest, for me, if I've finished a particularly difficult book I return to people like Garth Nix or Neil Gaiman. I've lost count of how many times I've read Stardust. I also tend to pick that one back up if I've run out of things to read. Although I can't see that happening again for some time!

Agatha Christie, especially the Miss Marples.

Maybe James Patterson and the Alex Cross novels. Exceptionally easy to read and always enjoyable. Then again, I tend not to differentiate between books that are supposed to have a deeper meaning and those that are just meant to be read. Whether you think insights and meanings are actually there is probabaly just as subjective as whether you do or don't like a book, and chances are whatever message or whatever is there is lost on me anyway.
