Jennifer Saunders tipped as the next Dr Who
Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders is tipped to be the first ever female Time Lord.
The comic, famous for her role as outrageous Edina, in is in talks to take on the role of Doctor Who - albeit for a one-off special episode.
A source told The Sun: "She's in the running and we all think she would be fantastic."
Fans of the show were left stunned earlier this month when David Tennant's Dr Who co-star Catherine Tate let slip during a radio interview that it could be his last series.
Catherine, who plays Doctor Who's assistant Donna, confirmed that she too would be stepping down from the show after series four.
She told Jonathan Ross on his Radio 2 show: "I think it's maybe David's last series."
James Nesbitt is the widely pegged as the favourite to permanately replace David, with Welshman Rhys Ifans also rumoured to be in contention for the part.

Rhys Ifans would rock

Ifans would be a good choice actually. James Nesbitt would be a dreadful choice. It's an interesting idea, but I honestly don't think they'll ever have a female Doctor. It's an idea they've raised before.
Mind you, strictly according to the continuity of the programme Romana is still wandering about. They could bring her back.

I agree on both counts. As for a female Doctor, personally I think it would be a terrible idea and I have a suspicion that it would somehow alienate a lot of older fans of the show. This isn't a sexist thing, I just think that the character of the Doctor is better as a male. The idea of changing it to a woman seems gimmicy and I don't see what's so bad about having male Time Lords staying male and female ones being female, they wouldn't consider casting a woman as Robin Hood so why do they have to keep banging on about having the Doctor be a female?
dragonfall- 12-18-2007
No idea. It's just something that the tabloids throw up every few years. Maybe if it had been hinted at right at the beginning of the programme (not that it would have happened in the 60's) people would accept it more, but I think the programme is far too established to make such a fundamental change to what we know about the Time Lords

I'd like to agree but I sometimes wonder with Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson in charge. If they're feeling particularly reckless they might just try it. For me personally it would mess too much with the whole back history and 'mythology' (for want of a better word) of the series.

And it's all been denied!
Ten-inch dismisses rumours
And Jennifer Saunders is playing the doctor. In one episode only.

He not going to admit he's quitting till there get into the new series. Methinks Catherine Tate has a big mouth
PrincessAura- 12-19-2007
But he's signed up for another four specials at least. And yeah, looks like she's got the wrong end of the stick somewhere.

I just can't see the BBC not making another series for a couple of years after the next one. It will be made with or without him as its too much of a moneyspinner for them.

From the BBC
New guest star and episode titles announced.
Georgia Moffett, the daughter of Fifth Doctor Peter Davison, will guest star in Series Four of Doctor Who.
Georgia originally auditioned for a role in Gareth Roberts' Agatha Christie episode, but so impressed the production team that she was offered a much more exciting part in another episode, currently filming in Cardiff.
Additionally, two episode titles have been announced. Episode one, written by Russell T Davies, will be called Partners In Crime, whilst episode four has been named The Sontaran Strategem. It's the first of a two-parter by Helen Raynor.

They changed the theme music...you can't do that!
Aeon- 12-25-2007
Terrible! How dare they?!
Erm... what do we think of the actual episode? And the trailers?
Electric Sheep- 12-25-2007
Hey, don't laugh, the theme tune was brilliant as it was and doesn't need jazzing up and a drum machine to make it any better!
Well, it gets (on first viewing) a resounding 'hmmm' from me. I thought it was distinctly average especially for a Christmas special. A gang of unsympathetic characters, a highly borrowed story idea (turn the ship upside down and you've got The Poseiden Adventure in space), lots of shouting, unconvincing action sequences, sets that look like sets and at the end of it all, an extremely weak bad guy...on wheels. The only thing I will give them credit for is a couple of nice script points and the fact that they didn't take the easy option of bringing Kylie back at the end. Do I sound unimpressed? I guess I was, I think the problem is that I've come to expect more from Doctor Who recently and after a disappointing third series this is just carrying on in the same direction. You raised the bar Mr Davies, it's upto you to vault over it and not start to limbo under it.
As for the trailers, it looked like there were about three or four episodes previewed and they did look impressive...but then so did last years.
Oh, and just to cap it all, the podcast commentary is only being streamed and is not available for download as all the others have been since New Earth. Just about sums it up for me.

Erm... I was agreeing with you not being sarcastic, Leccy.
My overall feeling after watching the special was meh, I'm sorry to say. The other half was saying that Astrid is an anagram of Tardis, anyone think this was just coincidence? Looking forward to the new series and Torchwood.
