Electric Sheep- 12-25-2007

Erm... I was agreeing with you not being sarcastic, Leccy. My overall feeling after watching the special was meh, I'm sorry to say. The other half was saying that Astrid is an anagram of Tardis, anyone think this was just coincidence? Looking forward to the new series and Torchwood. Apologies, Aeon. I read it as a verbal version of this  but that was probably my mood that made me read it that way. Apologies again. I knew the Astrid/Tardis thing already as I was sad enough to do the quiz on the BBC site advent calender the other day and it was one of the questions. I don't know about the new series of Torchwood, the trailer did look good but I got slightly bored with the first series. I'll still watch it when it's on with an open mind though. One other point where I am slightly annoyed with those in control of Doctor Who (it's not my Doctor Who day today). I got the series three DVD box set today and settled down to watch The Runaway Bride with the commentary track only to discover that they just shoved the podcast on there. A box set that costs over the odds and more than the others and it has a commentary track that I downloaded for free last Christmas on it!?!

Electric Sheep- 12-27-2007

They changed the theme music...you can't do that! According to the (disappointing) commentaries on the series three box set, they are going to be rewriting the end theme music for the next series as they have been ordered by the BBC to make the end titles no more than 30 seconds long. I'm getting more and more disgruntled with Doctor Who as time goes on.

The Christmas Special was good, him out of Keeping Up Appearances was good too, but I think there was a little too much star power from Kylie. As for me and my film references, I was expecting BIG references to Titanic (1997), but this was alot more like The Poseidon Adventure (1972), where you had a group of people trying to stay alive, and they die one by one... :) I await a response from our own Doctor Who fanboy, Dragonfall... ;)

I await a response from our own Doctor Who fanboy, Dragonfall... ;) I've been waiting for this and yet it still hasn't come. Did he miss it or something? :-o

I await a response from our own Doctor Who fanboy, Dragonfall... ;) I've been waiting for this and yet it still hasn't come. Did he miss it or something? :-o LOL. Of course I didn't miss it. We had guests over Christmas and I haven't been online much. My thoughts about the episode are very similar to Leccy's. I do need to watch it again but the overall impression was distinctly average. The storyine was a bit hackneyed, and the surprise reveal of the villian was err, not that surprising. Kylie Minogue's performance was ok but the way the part was written, anybody could have played it. It definately needed beefing up a little. Surprising, as the last three companion roles have been very well written. I thought the design of the Host was a bit too 'Robots of Death' for my liking. Overall, it seemed a half-hearted effort. I quite liked the funked-up theme tune though

Electric Sheep- 12-28-2007

Overall, it seemed a half-hearted effort. I think half-hearted sums it up quite well. I wonder if they were so excited about getting Kylie Minogue that they forgot to write a storyline and had to cobble one together in a rush at the last minute.

dragonfall- 12-28-2007

It wasn't even like she was worth it. I'm not saying she was bad. It was just a very poorly written part. Some of the dialogue was a bit atrocious too. If Tennant didn't have the conviction that he does in the role, the Doctor would have come over as a right prat.

Electric Sheep- 12-28-2007

Let's face it, if it hadn't been Kylie Minogue and had been any other actress you really wouldn't have noticed any difference. I honestly don't see that she bought anything to the episode that nobody else could have. I agree with you about the dialogue, some of it did sound cheesy and it was only the fact that Tennant comes across so well that it didn't sound even worse. There were very few plus points to come out of that episode...oddly enough it was the second most watched thing on Christmas Day and got around 12 million viewers apparently.

dragonfall- 12-28-2007

Well, at least it's still popular. On a slightly different note, was that a Sonic Screwdriver that Sarah Lancaster was holding in the trailers?

Electric Sheep- 12-28-2007

I believe so, whether it was her own personal sonic or whether she's managed to somehow purloin the Doctor's we will have to see.

dragonfall- 12-28-2007

Part of me is thinking the Rani? Probably won't be though.

Donald McKinney- 12-29-2007

Is it true the Doctor is off to Rome in the new series?? I heard the BBC kept the set from the series Rome standing at Cinecittà Studios in Italy for any other Roman themed productions they wanted to do, and it was reported earlier this year the Doctor Who team were gonna use it...

Electric Sheep- 12-29-2007

Part of me is thinking the Rani? Probably won't be though. I think if it was they wouldn't have included her in a teaser trailer...you never know though.

Overall, it seemed a half-hearted effort. I think half-hearted sums it up quite well. I wonder if they were so excited about getting Kylie Minogue that they forgot to write a storyline and had to cobble one together in a rush at the last minute. I thought it was a really disappointing episode. I was actually fighting against falling asleep during it which I have never done before during a Dr. Who episode. Well, the doctor was as always, but I couldn't care less for the other flat characters. And the cliched poor script: crap. The trailers for series 4 looked pretty promising though, so I'll keep watching.
