Shaken not stirred - help with cocktails OK, here's the deal. Mr DF has a fantastic cocktail set that he bought in Chicago but we never use it. We want to get a stock of stuff in for when we have parties and things, but to be honest I'm not much of a cocktail person.
What I'm after is for people to recommend their favourite cocktails and, quite importantly, how to make them. Any help is appreciated. :D

Manhattan
3/4 oz sweet vermouth
2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 maraschino cherry
1 twist orange peel
Combine the vermouth, bourbon whiskey, and bitters with 2 - 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Stir gently, don't bruise the spirits and cloud the drink. Place the cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain the whiskey mixture over the cherry. Rub the cut edge of the orange peel over the rim of the glass and twist it over the drink to release the oils but don't drop it in.

When I worked behind a bar, I learned this invaluable little drink that really puts the 'cock' in 'cocktail'.
Blowjob's Revenge
1 part Irish Cream
1 part Lime Juice
-Hold the Irish Cream in your mouth.
-Slurp the Lime Juice up, and hold in your mouth also.
-Mix in your mouth - as you would with mouthwash.
Apparently, for I have no personal experience of this, the resulting taste is less than pleasant.
For the record, no one asked for it, but it would have been fun to see some lass show her boyfriend how to drink it and wait for the inevitable reaction...

Oh yes. Also known as a cement mixer. Not the most pleasurable drink I've ever had. If you serve the two drinks in the same glass it is known as a Monkey's Snot. For those of you who don't know, the acidity of the lime causes the cream in the liqueur to curdle and go gloopy.

Monkey's Spunk by the sounds of it...allegedly...

Indeed
Mojito!!!
1.5 oz BACARDI Rum
12 fresh spearmint leaves
1/2 lime
7 oz club soda
2 tbsp. simple syrup
(or 4 tsp. sugar)
For the smoothest summer cocktails, gently crush mint leaves and lightly squeeze lime in a cool tall glass. Pour sweet syrup to cover and fill glass with ice. Add Bacardi Rum, club soda, and stir your emerging mojito well. Garnish with a lime wedge and a few sprigs of mint.

Oh I so want to try one of those. Just haven't got round to it yet.
BTW, if anyone can tell me how to make a proper New Orleans Hurricane I promise to love you forever.

Sorry for lowering the tone there people :D
incidentally, anyone got any ideas for non-alcoholic cocktails?

In theory these are the ingredients for the Pat O'Brien Hurricane from the French Quarter of New Orleans. I haven't tried this one obviously as I've never been there. I'm working on it.
- 2 oz light rum
- 2 oz dark rum
- 2 oz passion fruit juice
- 1 oz orange juice
- 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
- 1 tbsp simple syrup
- 1 tbsp grenadine
- Garnish: orange slice and cherry

The name sadly, isn't exactly butch, but I do like a nice Shirley Temple.
2 parts ginger ale
1 part orange juice
and a splash of grenadine
Cuchulainn- 01-10-2008
No...
Moving on... :D
Tricolour
A glass large enough to accomodate 3 large shots
Bailey's
Creme De Menthe
Jameson Whiskey
Pour the shot of Bailey's into the glass
Slowly pour the shot of creme de menthe on top
Ditto with the Jameson...
Not a true Irish tricolour but a few of them will have you singing Molly Malone...

A rather yummy non-alcoholic cocktail.
Acapulco Gold
Six parts pineapple juice
One part grapefruit juice
Two parts coconut cream
Two parts fresh cream and a scoop of crushed ice.
Shake it all up and serve as it is, don't strain it.

Hmm. Admitedly it's been about 14 years since I went to New Orleans and had one but I swear it tasted mainly of rum and cherries.
