Gimli The Dwarf- 01-01-2008
A round up of films seen over the last few weeks
Ocean’s Twelve (2nd view) – This lacks the freshness of the first film or the enjoyability of the third, but for all it’s knowing smugness and the sensation it was just a group of friends getting together and having a laugh, it’s still a decent way to pass the time – 3/5
A Cottage In Dartmoor (1st view) – Stunning silent drama from director Anthony Asquith. An escaped convict turns up at the titular house and then we see the events that led to his arrest via flashback. Just brilliant, one of the very best silent films I’ve seen – 5/5
Never Weaken (1st view) - My first Harold Lloyd film and what great fun it was. Like many silent comedy the plot shifts midway, it changes from a slapstick romance to a thriller amongst the scaffolds of a building site. Great fun and a visual treat – 4/5
Superman Returns (2nd view) – One of those films that could have been so much better. Brandon Routh is a good Superman, Kevin Spacey is effective as Lex Luthor, and Kate Bosworth is abysmal as Lois, as is Lois herself, a thoroughly unlikeable person. Good effects, idiotic plot; the best bit is the credit sequence when that thunderous John Williams theme tune kicks in – 3/5
A Man Called Horse (1st view) – Brit toff Richard Harris is on a hunting trip in America when he gets captured by Sioux Raiders. Initially humiliated and treated like a horse, he gradually comes to clear their ways and respect them. Not bad at all, but it isn’t Dances With Wolves – 3/5
It’s A Wonderful Life (3rd view) – The 4th grea-*test*-('") film ever made, the ultimate Christmas film and as George Bailey, James Stewart gives the finest performance I’ve ever seen. A guaranteed tearjerker, it’s filled with unforgettable moments, superb writing and fascinating characters. Simply brilliant – 5/5
Convict 13 (1st view) – Buster Keaton short in which a case of mistaken identity leads him to Death Row, then onto prison warden. As amusing as ever, there are more laughs in these 20 minutes than most modern comedians can generate in their entire careers – 4/5
The Scarecrow (1st view) – Keaton again, and this one is unmissable. Buster and his friend, both after the same girl, share a one-room house, and the space saving ingenuity on display is staggering. The film culminates in a great motorcycle chase. Great fun – 5/5
Legend (1st view) – The only Ridley Scott film I needed to see, and the only one I wouldn’t look forward to watching again. Tim Curry’s makeup was fantastic, but everything was poor. Awful characters, abysmal music, ridiculous story, terrible acting, it’s hard to believe that Scott directed this.
Muppet Christmas Carol (20th-ish view)- The second best Christmas film, and the best version of the classic tale. Wonderful songs, great humour and visuals gags never detract from the story at hand, and it’s a -*test*-('")ament to all involved that a bunch if Muppets can actually make this so heart-warming – 5/5
Hawk The Slayer (1st view) – John Terry (perhaps better known as Dr Div from ER, or Jacks’ dad from Lost plays the hero in this woeful 80s fantasy flick. Jack Palance is his evil brother. He’s plain bad as is the film, a bit like Legend. I see a trend – 2/5
Kandahar (1st view) – Pretty depressing, partially true story of an Afghan woman who returns to her home country to save her sister, who plans to commit suicide to escape the Taliban regime – 3/5
A Christmas Story (20th-ish view) – A fantastic festive film, little seen but absolutely brilliant. It’s about a young boy who wants to get a BB Gun for Christmas and the lengths he goes to in order to try and get one. It’s a lot funnier than it sounds. Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon play his parents and they’re both hilarious. A real treat – 5/5
Scrooge (5th view) – A great version of A Christmas Carol, but it does slap on the sentiment at times, and is quite twee at others. Still, Alastair Sim is brilliant in the title role the best screen Ebenezer I’ve seen – 4/5
Ella Enchanted (1st view) – Fun while it last yet instantly forgettable, this has the sense of humour of a live action Shrek, or perhaps the Princess Bride for the 00’s. The best bit was Anne Hathaway singing Somebody To Love. Any film with a Queen song can’t be a total loss – 3/5
Herbie: Fully Loaded (1st view) – Like Ella, forgettable fun. Lindsey Lohan “acts” as best she can while trying to look pretty, Justin Long pops up (I quite like him, he’s a lovable geek), and Michael Keaton sleepwalks his way through. Herbie’s the star though, as always. Still, I would rather have watched one of the classic Herbies; I’d have even settled fro the Bruce Campbell/John Hannah 90s version – 3/5
Second Best (2nd view) – William Hurt is always good value for money, and his restrained method of acting is rarely more apparent than here, in which he plays a Welsh postmaster who is looking to adopt. He’s backed up by the likes of Jane Horrocks, John Hurt and Alan Cumming, all good, but the film is never all that enthralling – 3/5
Home On The Range (2nd view) - The most recent 2D Disney animation and quite probably the worst. Disney have made some grand pictures in the past, this isn’t one of them – 2/5
The Cat In the Hat (1st view) – I saw it two day ago, I can barely remember what happened. It had good costumes. I think – 2/5
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (2nd view) - From my memory of the book this is quite a faithful adaptaion, and the deadpan comedy on show does work often, but it it falls flat just as much. The best bits are Stehpen Fry's narration and the falling sperm whale. Sam Rockwell and Mos Def didn't impress me all that much, but Martin Freeman and Zooey Deschanel make for an engaging couple - 3/5

Blade Runner (1982), the Final Cut of director Ridley Scott's most famous and probabily best film, based upon Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Set in Los Angeles in 2019, this has cop Rick Deckard, (Harrison Ford), a 'Blade Runner' hunting down 4 Replicants, led by Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer), Replicants are human-like robots, illegal on Earth, but used in outer-space as slaves. A beautifully visual feast, with Dick's world brought to life, director Scott has the perfect eye for visuals, and the world of 2019 is slowly coming true as well, which is quite scary!! 5/5
The Good Shepherd (2006), Robert De Niro's pet project for a decade, this film is about the CIA in it's infancy, seen through the eyes of Edward Wilson (Matt Damon), a patriotic young man who stands for what he believes in, but that's challenged when he learns of corruption within the CIA. A very classy and suspensful drama, set from 1939 to the Bay of Pigs in 1961. It's well directed by De Niro and beautifully shot by Robert Richardson, the plot might be confused in places, but it has a brilliant supporting cast. As well as Damon and De Niro, there's also Angelina Jolie, Alec Baldwin, William Hurt, Billy Crudup, John Turturro, Michael Gambon, and in his first film in 8 years, Joe Pesci!! :D 4/5

Can I please remind people that when posting pictures in a thread that the size of the picture should be appropriate to what the picture is showing.
Large pictures slow the forum down, especially for people on slower speed connections.
640x480 is a limit not a target

I think we need polls in a different section...
The place looks a bit disorganized to me...
Screamy- 01-03-2008
Looks fine to me. Don't want to turn this place into Movie Musings in Empire which has been destroyed because of the over strictness and obsession with tidiness
The polls are to prompt discussion about movies

Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Pretty poor, The cameo from Kermit the frog and the monkey trying to hug Mutant were the only real good parts

I Am Legend
Starts well and is pretty good until about half way through and then it turns into pretty standard Hollywood action movie fare. 6.5/10
