P.S. I Love You Its worth seeing only to see how crap Gerard Butler Irish accent is. What the hell was he thinking  The comedy bits of the film were ok especially Lisa Kurdow seeking a husband and the Vicar at the wake. It was also way too long but having said that the millions of ladies in the cinema seems to love it :-o Overall too long winded and very awkward and artificial 5/10

A modern day parable featuring that all elusive creature: man in touch with his feelings... a role reversed Odyssey if you will, our heroine traipsing across the Atlantic and back discovering aspects of her beloved and ultimately finding herself.

Charlie Wilson's War (2007), from director Mike Nichols, a political drama with a sharp comic edge. This has Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks), a womaniser and boozer, who in 1980, is inspired to help out rebels in Afghanistan, fight against the Soviet Union who are occupying their country. With a little help from Texan sociallite Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts) and loose cannon CIA agent Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman), they help the Afghans regain control of their country, but not knowing what effects it'll have in the future. A very good character piece, brilliantly directed and thoroughly thought-provoking. Oh, and Philip Seymour Hoffman steals just about EVERY scene he's in, he's probabily worth the price of a ticket alone!! :D 4/5

Charlie Wilson's War Thoroughly enjoyable, witty and interesting and great performances from all. But something was missing I can't put my finger on and it was over too quickly 3.5/5 Dan in Real Life Absolutely fantastic, very very funny and heartwarming and heartbreaking too... Steve Carrell is absolutely brilliant, as are Juliette Binoche and finally Dane Cook is likeable. Able support too from John Mahoney and Dianne Wiest... a fantastic comedy drama well worth seeing 4/5

Dan in Real Life "Love is not a feeling. It's an ability." What a wonderful sentiment. It's not about the feeling, it's allowing yourself to feel. Steve Carell gives an understated performance that should be recognised but will probably go unnoticed. A widower father of three girls who are all headstrong and smarter than he wants to give them credit for, he hates the fact that they're growing up as all he can see ahead of him is a life of loneliness. Until he meets the woman who blows his mind, the wonderful Marie. He's smitten from the moment he meets her, one small problem. She's dating his younger, cuter, more outgoing brother and the whole family (and there's about 20 of them all told) are at his parent's home in Rhode Island for a holiday. Now it has to be said that this is a family you would kill to be in, Dianne Wiest can be my mum anyday (sorry mum, but they do a family talent show!). Sentimental and warming without heading to soppiness, laugh out loud funny in many places and anyone who's a parent will empathise totally. OK so it's not the kind of thing that I'd normally enjoy but for some reason I'm becoming much less cynical these days. Although I still maintain a cynic is what an optimist calls a realist. Maybe I'm getting softer in my old age, but I think this one is going to end up finding a space on my DVD shelf. 4/5

Gimli The Dwarf- 01-13-2008

So far this year. Repo Man (1st view) – Cult 80’s film starring Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton as, well, repo men who end up dealing with the CIA and aliens. What the hell it was all about I will never know – 3/5 The History Boys (1st view) – A crushing disappointment. I always have a problem when people sit around and talk about philosophy, art and literature in films. Not because they shouldn’t, not even because half of it goes over my idiotic head, but because it almost always sounds scripted, it never flows naturally. Woody Allen can pull it off, the folk here can’t. The young cast aren’t brilliant and the whole film feels contrived – 2/5 Planes, Trains & Automobiles (2nd view) – Some very funny moments and nice performances from Steve Martin and John Candy - 3/5 Black Christmas (1974) (1st view) – A serial killer is on the loose in a girl’s college dorm. Quite suspenseful and genuinely creepy at times – 4/5 The Saphead (1st view) – Buster Keaton’s first feature film and it certainly doesn’t match his later films. He’s on fine form but he’s surrounded by a dodgy cast and hampered by a trivial plot – 3/5 I Am Legend (1st view) – Yep, the CGI is dodgy and the addition ox extra cast members detract from the film, but for the most part this is exhilarating. The first half is a great depiction of isolation and Will Smith gives a terrific performance. Some very tense scenes and a wonderful score from James Newton Howard help make the flaws forgivable – 4/5 Biloxi Blues (1st view) – Mike Nichols directs Matthew Broderick in an adaptation of the semi-autobiographical stage play from Neil Simon It takes place at a WWII training camp and is both hilarious and poignant – 4/5 Anything Else (1st view) – Woody Allen directs and stars in this light-hearted affair. Jason Biggs plays an aspiring comic writer who is having relationship troubles and tales advice from Allen. Some hilarious one-liners and nice support from Christina Ricci and Stockard Channing – 4/5 First Daughter (1st view) – Completely harmless, instantly forgettable piece of cinematic fluff. Katie “no talent” Holmes plays the first daughter who just wants to be normal. Michael Keaton plays the President and makes us long for the days when he appeared in great films – 3/5 Ice Princess (1st view) – Like the above, you watch it and have hardly any memory the next day, but its fun while it lasts. 3/5 Constantine (2nd view) – Some decent performances help to keep this film interesting, especially from Rachel Weisz. Effects are pretty ropey at times though. Director Francis Lawrence also made I Am Legend; perhaps he should leave the compute alone. Rain Man (2nd view) – One of only two Cruise films made prior to 1995 that I actually really like. He gives a grand, often overlooked performance, and his a perfect match to the equally excellent Hoffman. Engaging, emotional and often very funny – 4/5 Kate and Leopold (3rd view) – Hugh Jackman has gone onto bigger and better things since this 2001 romantic comedy. He’s not bad at all as the 18th century English Lord who ends up in modern day New York. Meg Ryan isn’t all that great though – 3/5 Churchill: The Hollywood Years (1st view) – A somewhat interesting idea is ruined here as Christian Slater makes us forget that he can actually be quite good a and a whole host of Brit has-been comedians turn up and try to act – 2/5 Enchanted (1st view) – So far, the best film I've seen this year. A nice premise is bolstered by a very witty and charming script, some wonderful songs and fine performances from all. Amy Adams is a delight to watch as Princess Giselle, you never once don’t believe that she’s a real life Disney Princess. I’d love to see her get an Oscar nom. There are some great allusions to previous Disney films (“Happy Working Song” is a gem) and Pip is just hilarious – 4/5 Bugsy Malone (2nd view) – A very odd concept indeed (a gangster musical played entirely by children who shoot each other with custard) yet somehow it works superbly. A delight to watch – 4/5 Stargate (4th view) – Roland Emmerich’s follow-up to Universal Soldier is his weakest so far (and yes, I have seen Godzilla!) A nice idea that never really takes off, but does have a few suitably rousing action scenes and effects – 3/5

Dan in Real Life Little slow paced But after that, the movie took off. Good family comedy with some real laughs 7/10

Great to see some love for Dan, a utterly magnificent film... see above review :D

Flags of our Fathers - Fantastically moving film about the quite heroic acts of the men who fought at Iwo Jima. Also very thought provoking around the whole area of the mythology of images. How the above image was used to inspire the Americans to push on a war they were on the point of losing through lack of funds. A slow film that never seemed slow at any point. A real triumph. 8/10

Aeon- 01-13-2008

Aura has echoed my view and sentiment on this film far more eloquently than I ever could!

Alpha Dog Surprisingly good and powerful story about a bunch of wannabe gangsters. Timberlake was also surprisingly good. Highlight of the movie was Sharon Stone in a fat suit. 7/10

Charlie Wilson's War - It's tough to do a political drama with comedy that works and doesn't feel out of place, but I think this pulled it off. It was genuinely funny in places and made its political point succintly and firmly without beating the audience over the head with it. Not a perfect film, it was a bit slow getting started and I felt it it ended a bit abruptly but it is funny, thought provoking, well written and well performed. I agree that Phillip Seymour Hoffman absolutely stole the show, but Tom Hanks was also surprisingly good in his role and the relationship between the two was the highlight of the film.
