That was a decidedly unsavoury movie... Still can't get the rank taste of it out of my mouth...

The Jerk (2nd view) – I might be the only person who prefers Steve Martin’s film from the last 16 years than his earlier stuff. This is certainly a bad film, it just isn’t a particularly hilarious one, undeserving of its reputation – 3/5 Hot Shots! Part Deux (3rd view) – Completely idiotic Rambo-ish spoof which goes for every joke it can, and thankfully many of them hit. Not a patch on the naked Gun films but more enjoyable than Airplane – 3/5 Breaking and Entering (1st view) – Jude Law takes the lead in Anthony Minghella’s London drama. The fine cast included Ray Winstone, Juliette Binoche and Robin Wright Penn. It’s a tad contrived but quite gripping – 4/5 Blue (1st view) – Derek Jarman’s film that has the director narrating random thoughts for 80 minutes while the screen remains a constant blue. An interesting experiment, but not really a film – 3/5 Duel At Diablo (1st view) – James Garner is a particular favourite actor of mine, and he was as watchable as ever in this western, ably backed p by Sidney Poitier and Bibi Andersson. The film itself is forgettable fun, but it has one of the weirdest western scores ever, a mix of standard genre themes and 60’s music that wouldn’t; seem out of place in The Odd Couple. In The Valley Of Elah (1st view) – Engrossing drama from Paul Haggis with an excellent turn from Tommy Lee Jones as the ex military policeman trying to find out the truth about his son’s disappearance. It flounders a bit near the end with an “IS that it?” style conclusion, bit its; powerful stuff – 4/5 Southern Comfort (1st view) – A group of National Guardsmen get chased around the Louisiana backwaters by local hunters in this tense action thriller from Walter Hill. Powers Boothe, Fred Ward and Keith Carradine are amongst those fighting for their lives in this Deliverance-style gem – 4/5 Goodbye Bafana (1st view) – Well-acted drama chronicling the relationship between Nelson Mandela and his prison guard James Gregory. Dennis Haysbert and Joseph Fiennes acquit themselves well, but how much of it is true is a matter for debate, especially as Gregory’s own account of events has been questioned – 4/5

Twelve Angry Men - Difficult film for me to rate. I remember watching this at about 14 and being blown away with it. From then I knew film was my art form. I have watched at loads of time but this was the first time for about four or five years. I can see problems with it now. Access to the emotions is to easy, they come to the conclusion too quick and it has always bothered me the Lee J Cobb should be playing noughts and crosses. It does not fit his character at all. But it is still a very good film and sentiment means i cannot give it less than full marks. 10/10

There Will Be Blood - Strangely enough, I dragged my boyfriend along to see this and he ended liking it more than I did... Overrated, overlong wannabe epic. We witness the personal rise and fall of Daniel Plainview (Day Lewis) as he creates an oil empire in early 20th century America. There is a strong religious element in the film which frankly I found scary - the congregation, especially the minister (Dano), was straight out of a horror film. The ending was cartoonish and completely out of place with the rest of the film. It's also a travesty that it's up for so many awards - I'd only agree with any technical/ crew awards. One of those films I'm glad I have an unlimited card - I'd be livid if I'd paid to see it. I won't be seeing this one again in a hurry.

The film does have some obvious flaws but when it it grabs you in such a way and refuses to let go, plus the fact it's so enjoyable, I can't not give it full marks.

I loved it but agree about the ending being just daft. It almost ruined it for me. I think Day Lewis deserves his Oscar. The thing I fiound most striking about the film was the Score. It was mesmerising.

Anastasia - Sub Disney animation which was pretty good. Nothing much surprising but charmingly done I felt. 6/10

There Will Be Blood OK but doesn't live up to the hype. I'm starting to find Day Lewis overacting and chewing up the set a little tiresome. Dano was very good and one for the future. 7/10 Rambo Better than excepted. It's overload with blood and guts but entertaining never the less 6/10

A Modern American Classic

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=y-AXTx4PcKI Glengarry Glen Ross - I did not like it as much as I thought I would. Jack Lemmon is fantastic in his last great performance. You can smell the desperation coming off him. However the film belongs to Alec Baldwin as the bastard giving the sales pitch from hell. Watch the Youtube clip of him in full flow it is fantastic. 7/10 Cinderella - Classic Disney story. Charming and brilliant and all the better for the fact they used proper voice artists and not some loudmouth actor desperate that you recognise their voice. 8/10

Garbage. Can anyone tell me what in the name of Satan the point of this was?

Homer- 02-27-2008

Maybe it's pure evil - you wasted 2 hours watching it. That sounds pretty evil to me!

The Big Lebowski (1998), The Coen Brothers follow up Fargo (1996) with arguably the funniest film they've ever made, and one with a BIG cult following. The film has bowling hippy slacker Jeff Lebowski AKA The Dude (Jeff Bridges), who is mistaken for a millionaire with the same name, whilst trying to get compensation for his rug which was soiled, ("That rug really tied the room together.") The Dude becomes a liason between the millionaire Lebowski and the captors of his now "kidnapped" wife. An absolutely hilarious film, the kind where you discover something new with every viewing, some brilliant characters and some of the best dialogue the Coen's have ever come up with. Bridges has never been better than this, and John Goodman steals the show as the Dude's bowling buddy Walter!! :D 5/5 O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Coen Brothers take on Homer's Odyssey. The ancient Greek poem is now set in the American Deep South of the 1930's. It has convicts Everett (George Clooney), Pete (John Turturro) and Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) escaping from a chain gang, Everett wants to get home to his wife Penny (Holly Hunter) and his daughters. But, he, Pete and Delmar soon find themselves on a treasure hunt, staying one step ahead of a demonic lawman and they become famous as music group The Soggy Bottom Boys. This is the film with it's very famous and brilliant bluegrass themed soundtrack, which brought music like that to the masses, the Coen's have a good knowledge for music like that, and they capture the period wonderfully and finding time for good humour and their crackerjack dialogue along the way. Oh, and they found a good lead in George Clooney!! ;) 5/5
