Screamy- 03-08-2008

:? Umm i said the remake doesnt get close to the one the Michael Caine one

PrincessAura- 03-08-2008

Yeah, and the one with Wahlberg wasn't a remake. It was a continuation.

Screamy- 03-08-2008

Not a remake? Italian Job (2003) A gang of robbers, lead by career criminal Charlie Croker, create the largest traffic jam in Los Angeles history, giving them time to pull off a theft of gold bullion. They get away in their Mini Coopers, which are small enough to drive on sidewalks so they can make a clean get away before the traffic jam clears. Little changes still make it a remake

PrincessAura- 03-08-2008

Despite the fact that they tell you in the film that this Charlie Croker is the original Charlie Croker's son. He learned the same skills from his dad. Yes it's very similar but it isn't a remake and the makers were very clear to point that out.

Screamy- 03-08-2008

The director adds a plot device that he's son of one of the robber so its not a remake..It a remake no matter how you look at it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/reviews/3123020.stm

PrincessAura- 03-08-2008

There's no point in anyone saying any differently to you Screamy. You have in it your head regardless of what the situation is that it's a remake so what's the point in anybody, even the director, explaining that it isn't. I give up.

Ok lets put this thread back on topic

A Clockwork Orange (1971), Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, and his most controversial film as well, (banned in the UK for 27 years.) This is a down-to-earth piece of sci-fi starring Malcolm McDowell as Alex, a violent but charming thug who is jailed for his crimes, but volunteers for a government experiment to brainwash criminals to they're not violent anymore, but the experiment has it's flaws... This is a social statement and indictment on the way things are, or were, going and how it'll turn out. Kubrick wasn't far wrong, bar a few tweaks in fashion here and there, plus McDowell puts on a great performance as Alex, it's a pity he never achieved superstardom, but Kubrick brings the best out his cast, and creates a weirdly offbeat but realistic vision of the UK. He certainly knows how to frame a shot and create a mood that stays throughout the film. Oh, and Fred Elliot out of Coronation Street makes an appearance!! :D 5/5

Planet Terror (2007), Robert Rodriguez's first part of the ill-fated Grindhouse double-bill he and Quentin Tarantino had envisioned, but this is arguably the best of the two films, (the other being Death Proof (2007)). Set in one night, it has a group of people, including Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan), El Wray (Freddy Rodríguez) and Dr. Dakota Block (Marley Shelton) trying to survive after a bio-toxic gas released from a military base in Austin, Texas causes people to turn into zombies. A really fun film, and one of Rodriguez's best films in years, along with Sin City (2005), maybe his best since From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), of which it shares similiarities to. It feels like a good, raw 1970's cinema experience, with scratched and discoloured prints, and a missing reel. :P Oh, and the faux-trailer for Machete makes you want there to be a real film of it!! :D 4/5

Terminator 3 Rise Of The Machines While I don't think this film is as good as Terminator 1 & 2 i'd forgotten how good it was 7/10

The Bride of Frankenstein - Better than the first film because it humanises the monster more. And the Bride is another iconic image of the cinema. But the same as the original it is really dated and try as I might I could not love it. 6/10 Sunrise-A Song of Two Humans - I have never actually watched a silent film that was not a comedy before. I liked it a lot and it brings alive the Swanson line 'We didn't need lines then, we had faces.' My only criticism is it sagged very badly in the middle. But a very good film for all that. 8/10 The Game Plan - Yes it is overly sentimental and it is a very formulaic film. However the two leads in The Rock and the kid playing his daughter were utterly charming and i loved it. i actually blubbed in two parts of the film and any dad with a daughter (and I guess a son but daughter is better) should see it. 8/10 Spiderman 3 - Could not get through it. I just got terribly bored. They did such a good job with the original nothing was ever going to match it. Also the scales have dropped from my eyes and I can see what a turgid, blank actress Kirsten Dunst is.

Black Narcissus Really enjoyed it 8/10

Black Narcissus Really enjoyed it 8/10 I watched that recently Nicola and it just blew me away in a way no film has for some time. Bloody brilliant film. Oliver Twist - Roman Polanski version. Very good. Kinglsey is particularly good as Fagin. It is just when you know the story that well and have seen it so many times before I do find myself wondering what is the point a bit. But as a stand alone film not taking into account any previous versions it was very good. 7/10

Heat (1995), Michael Mann's pet project for 20 years, (once made as an 1989 TV movie called L.A. Takedown), but here made as a feature film. Inspired by a true story, this has streetwise yet emotional cop Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), trying to hunt down thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro). Hanna soon learns that he and McCauley have alot in common, including their troubled personal lives. Despite gaining a respect for McCauley, Hanna still vows to bring him down. Michael Mann creates a very good and very suspensful thriller, but it's two central performances from Pacino and De Niro really hold the film together, including one scene together in a diner. It's well shot, has some truly gripping moments of action, plus it has a brilliant supporting cast to compliment it's two lead performances. Los Angeles at night-time looks so ambient, something Mann later revisited with Collateral (2004). 4/5

The Other Boelyn Girl - Went because a friend wanted to go, but not on her own. I really enjoyed it. Easy to judge the people on modern day morality but I guess the moral code of the day was very different. If you were a woman of a certain standing and you did not marry well you were screwed. Morrissey was fantastic as the conniving Norfolk. 8/10 I am now off to check how much bullshit there is in the actual story.
