Gimli The Dwarf- 04-26-2008

Tell No One (1st view) – Harlan Coben’s novel gets a French makeover in this tense and exciting thriller. François Cluzet plays the doctor whose wife is murdered, only for her to contact him 8 years later. The story twists and turns keeping you guessing right till the end. Great stuff – 4/5 Did you not think there were too many twists in this film Gimli. They got on my nerves after a while. Just felt it was too convuluted in the end. It was getting that way, but after it finished I realised it did all make sense, and the very last twist did actually make more sense than a lot of what had gone before (sorry for being cryptic, I don't want to spoil it for others!) I agree what you say about Thandie Newton as well. John Carter was great before she came along.

Superbad (1st view) - A weird film this, as it was actually quite funny yet at the same time I didn't really like it. It was mainly Jonah Hill swearing and talking about sex, and two cops getting drunk and maing a mess of things. Teenagers wanting to get laid in films stopped being cool/funny years ago. Still, as I said, there were some good laughs to be had and the finally 5 minutes are surprisngly touching - 3/5

Kingdom Of Heaven - Director's Cut (1st view) - An absolutely incredible piece of 100%, 5 star, ultra-brilliant, stupendously wonderful awesomeness. I was one of the very few who adored the theatrical edition, so chances that I wouldn't like this more were slim. I doubt there are many better ways to spend 3 pre-dawn hours on a wet April Sunday. This is pretty much perfect. A tremendous cast all on fine form (yes, even Bloom), a wondrous score, beautiful cinematography, epic ection, and, as ever, great direction from Ridley Scott. Best film I've seen so far this year. Having not seen the film since the cinema I'd forgotten just how many fine actor are here in just small roles - Kevin McKidd, Philip Glenister, Micheal Sheen, Brendan Gleason, and they all offer fine support to those in the more prominent roles. Alexander Sidding is just about the standout, but it's hard to pick one performance as being better than the rest. Some time in the future, I might go and buy a copy of the theatrical edition just to compare the two. Just brilliant - 5/5

Hulk - Underrated adaptation. Lee provides a seriousness rarely given in the genre. Good performances all round and entertaining if slightly too long.

Cloverfield..........i enjoyed the ride. I felt like I was in one of those Disney rides.

1408 starring John Cusack and Samuel.l Jackson. First 1 hour got me wrapped up and engrossed then it all got a bit silly, we didn't find out enough even at the end, perhaps I should read the book. Not even the presence of Cusack enhanced this film its was ok,could have been better though. 3/5 The ballad of Jack and Rose Interesting story and even more interesting characters, great performances I would say all round,Daniel day lewis goes without saying but I have to say watch out for Ryan McDonald I thought he was especially good. A very hard hitting psychological drama,I liked it a lot.. 4/5

Storm Warning - Not sure what to class this as, its not a horror, gore-thriller maybe? Anyway, very good, very eww and (inappropiately) funny at times. Though I'd watch out guys, are there's one part you're really not going to like! 4/5

After seeing your review, but not reading it. I've been meaning to watch it since your last KoH review before Christmas, and your new one inspired me, but I wanted to go on without reminding myself beforehand of what happened in the film. As luck would have it, Sunday morning gave me the first chance in ages for an uninterrupted 3 hours. SWAT (4th view) – Hardly a masterpiece but it’s a decent enough way to spend 120 brainless minutes. The entire cast are going through the motions, but there are some energising action scenes - 3/5 The Spiral Staircase (1st view) – My mum bought this on VHS well over a decade ago, and it’s been about 5 years since I “borrowed” it and I’ve just now seen it. A classic piece of 40’s gothic, about a small town terrorised by a serial killer, and whose next victim might be a mute girl, played by Dorothy Maguire. She’s fantastic in the lead, and good support is given by Elsa Lanchester, George Brent and Ethel Barrymore – 4/5

Donald McKinney- 04-29-2008

Mars Attacks! (1996), one of Tim Burton's most underrated films, and probabily the most tongue-in-cheek of all. It's a multi-layered story, focusing the activities of a number of people, (from the US President (Jack Nicholson), to people working in Las Vegas, to trailer trash in Kansas), and how the visitation of martians from Mars affects them all, especially when things turn nasty. The film is a wonderful homage to old B-Movie sci-fi films of the 1960's, only this one is done on a much larger budget, and it has an all star cast, (including Glenn Close, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Tom Jones, Michael J. Fox, Martin Short, Jack Black, etc.) It's a very savage and very funny alien invasion film, if only more sci-fi films could follow suit... ;) 4/5 Get Shorty (1995), Director Barry Sonnenfeld creates a delicious satire on gangsters and Hollywood with his adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel. This has Miami loan-shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta), heading out to Vegas to collect a debt, but soon finds himself enlisted to go after film producer Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman). But, Palmer soons finds himself working for Zimm, when an idea for a film by Palmer interests Zimm. Get Shorty is a very stylish film, with a cool exterior, but with moments of good humour and very good dialogue. It's a reminder that Travolta is a good actor, and that making movies can be just as dangerous as being a gangster. 4/5

3rd or 4th time watching this, and it gets better every time.Excellent performances, imaginitive direction, beautiful cinematography and a marvellous score... This is as far from The Long Riders as you can get,but is all the better for it... 5/5

Best film I have seen this year, Assassination of Jesse James, should have got more recognition at the oscars imo. Very charming in places, fairly predictable in parts, and so much like another much loved film at the end. Emily Watson I liked a lot but then she's always good and Ben Chaplin wasn't bad havn't seen him in anything for ages. 3/5
