The Messenger: The Story Of Joan Of Arc (1st view) – Reasonable historical drama from Luc Beeson. There are some mightily impressive battle scenes and the film is at it’s best during these moments. In the lead role, Milla Jovovich verges from hilariously bad to actually quite good and Dustin Hoffman is wasted, appearing for just a few minutes in the final quarter of the film. John Malkovich is worth watching though – 3/5
Speed Racer (1st view) – A hugely disappointing waste of time. A film I’ve almost grown to admire based on the amount of things I dislike about it. I don’t care about the amount of CGI (I’m all for it) the dodgy dialogue, the wafer-thin story and poor characters (Hell, I like Van Helsing!!), there just something about this film that makes it very unlikeable. Not even the visuals were that impressive. Much had been written that the film looks like something you’ve never seen before. In a way that’s true and there is a novelty quality to having a film make you think you’re on acid, trapped in a land of psychedelia whilst hopped up on Red Bull and chocolate frosted sugar bombs. But such a vision is useless if awful editing makes it impossible to follow the action. Not even Michael Giachinno’s score can help, because that sucks as well. The very worst thing though was that awful Jimmy Krankie lookalike who played Spritle. I didn’t think it was possible, but there is now a performance I hate more by a child actor than Jake “ I almost ruined Star Wars for ever” Lloyd’s take as Anakin Skywalker. He was truly horrific, so bad he makes the rest of the film look like the Mona Lisa and he’s a festering, putrid boil on her forehead that needs to be burst. Just awful – 1/5
Dog Day Afternoon (3rd view) – Blistering crime drama from Sidney Lumet that tells the tale of Sonny and Sal who rob a bank, only for a hostage situation and media frenzy to occur. Al Pacino is superb in the lead and in my mind it’s easily his best performance. The support cast is great also, John Cazale and Chris Sarandon both shine, but it’s Charles Durning as the frazzled Detective Moretti who comes closest to matching Pacino.
