Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Dignified sequel, outstanding. I can't argue with that. Wonderful film!

On DVD...Didn't watch it over the weekend so I guess it goes in here... Bloody hell!! It goes on far too long...Burton is hammier than a mountain of pigs,Taylor basically just changes costumes every 10 minutes...the only one who acquits himself in any way is Rex Harrison, and even then you're expecting him to break into a number from My Fair Lady at any minute... 2.5/5

American Gangster (2007), Ridley Scott turns in a crime drama, set in Harlem in the 1960's and 70's. With Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, a gangster who becomes a huge drugs baron, who buys pure heroin, direct from Thailand, smuggling it into America in the coffins of soldiers killed in Vietnam. Meanwhile, cop Richie Roberts, (Russell Crowe), a clean, honest cop is determined to bring down Lucas. Scott does well with this material, giving a dark, grim look to 70's New York, but it does feel convulated in places, hopefully Scott will have a Director's Cut for the DVD!! :P 4/5

I really should keep up to date with this thread. All the films I’ve seen in the past few weeks. Wild Hogs (1st view) – Yes it’s a horrible movie, but I’m not ashamed to say it did hit the chuckle button at times. Reasonably fun – 3/5 People I Know (1st view) – Al Pacino is often very good. Shouty Al usually less good. Shouty and haggard Al is often bad, as he was here, and the film itself is a tiresome mess – 2/5 It’s A Free World (1st view) – Ken Loach tackles another social theme in this TV movie. Well acted by a bunch of non-actors and fairly thought provoking – 3/5 5 x 2 (1st view)– Fascinating French drama that takes 5 pivotal moments in one couples relationship – the first meeting, their wedding night, the birth of their child, a disastrous dinner party and their divorce but plays runs the segments chronologically backwards. Very good – 4/5 Mr And Mrs Smith - Brad Pitt, Anjelina Jolie and a lot of guns. That’s about it really, but it’s fun while it lasts – 3/5 Help! (1st view) – My second Beatles film, and the one that made me go and recently listen to all the Beatles albums. Not as good as A Hard Day’s Night, and the Fab Four still can’t act but it’s a great piece of fun – 4/5 Man Bites Dog – A Belgian film that has a documentary film crew following a charismatic serial killer around. He likes to start the month off by killing a postman, he has a favourite spot for dumping bodies, and he doesn’t like rival serial killers. The longer the crew film him, the bigger a part they play in his crimes. An extreme black comedy and 7 years after I first saw it still contains the most disturbing scene I’ve ever seen in a film – 4/5 The Valley Of Light (1st view) – An American TV movie starring Gretchen Mol and Chris Klein (the latter is surprisingly good). It’s the kind of film cynics would hate, as it consists solely of nice people in post-war small town America doing good deeds, falling in love and fishing. That’s about it really, but its heart is in the right place and is unashamedly feel good – 3/5 Sicko (1st view) – Suffice to say, next time I wait for 30 minutes for my GP then pay £6 odd for tablets. I won’t be complaining. Michael Moore is as biased as ever, but he gets his point across and is very funny in the process – 4/5 The Quiet (1st view) Elisha Cuthbert is jealous when her parents take in their Goddaughter, a deaf and mute girl. A twisty turner thriller, complete hokum but entertaining enough. Cuthbert seems to have improved, it’s a shame she was so bad in four seasons of 24 – 3/5 Rocky Balboa (1st view) – It’s been years since I saw any of the first 5 Rocky films, but I think I’m right in saying this is better than them all apart from the original. Predictable yet inspiring – 4/5 Stories Of Lost Souls (1st view) – A collection of 7 short films that feature world famous actors. The films are stuck together because, presumably, they all contain characters that are somehow lost. It didn’t seem that way to me. I watched it mainly for the Cate Blanchett short, Bangers, about a woman slowly losing her mind, and it was the best of he bunch – 3/5 An Inconvenient Truth (1st view) – Scary stuff, more than a bit depressing, funny at times. Worth watching – 4/5 Independence Day – Cheesy beyond belief and all the better for it. A superb sci-fi action extravaganza. The effects are amazing, the script is witty and it unleashed Will Smith, which I don’t see as a bad thing – 4/5 Elizabeth – The film that earned Cate Blanchett worldwide acclaim, and it’s as good now as it was 10 years ago. She gives a truly remarkable performance, is backed by a great cast, the score is amazing and the film looks wonderful. Yep, the history is fudged, but view the film as a historical thriller and not a history lesson and it’s a winner - 5/5 Elizabeth : The Golden Age (1st view) – More of the same really. Another superb central performance and its nice to see that Clive Owen wasn’t all that bad either. The armada scenes were very impressive, the score again spectacular and it looks beautiful. Time will tell if it can earn that extra mark – 4/5 Pearl Harbor - So help me, I love this film. Most agree that the central battle scene is amazing yet its surrounded by an unbelievably trite, clichéd and sentimental love story. I can’t disagree; it’s just that I happen to fall for that that very same love story every time I watch this. Must have seen it close to a dozen times now– 5/5 Freaks (1st view) – Started off slowly but this classic tale of a circus sideshow soon picked up and led to a very disturbing finale. Overacted to the point of absurdity at times, this is still compelling, but I’m not sure of the overall morality at work here and at the end its hard to feel sympathy for almost anyone. Powerful stuff though – 4/5 The Virgin & The Gypsy (1st view) – A 70s adaptation of the DH Lawrence story. Franco Nero and Joanna Shimkus play the title character rather well, but the sparks never fly as well as they should. Still, a fine way to spend 90 minutes – 4/5 Beowulf – Intense action, silly accents, great visuals, dodgy script. A real mishmash on offer here, but I found myself hooked thoughout. It’s no classic, but it does its job well enough – 4/5.
