Caught up on some movies this week. Rambo - great fun, not as violent as I was lead to believe but still glorious Rambo fun. Sly pulled it off IMO, it was as good a comeback for the big little man than Rocky was. Looking forward to the next installment. Deathproof/Planet Terror - enjoyable. I marginally preferred RR's segment, QT again showing he can make a stylish film but it could have been better. Great car stunts though. RR's bit was just Duck till Dawn again. Funny, gory, cool, Rodriguez has yet to let me down (I even love the Spy Kids films :D ) Hills Have Eyes 2 - not as good as the first one but amusing and annoying all the same. No Country for Old Men - Caught it at the cinema and again last week on DVD. Better the second time round, depite the fact I thought it was brilliant the first time. One of those films that I can completely understand other people hating. Chigurh is one of my Top 10 most scary f**ked up film characters.

Is that Richard Thomas I spy in that poster from All quiet on the western front ? I think I have seen that but it was an age ago. I watched Chaplin this afternoon as well, last time I saw it I was very ill and didn't appreciate it fully. Good to see it again was very interesting I love a good biopic. Robert played Charlie so incredibly well, was a fasinating story and I love to see how they depict the other major hollywood players at that time ie.. Douglas Fairbank so eloquently played by Kevin Kline. 4/5

Douglas Fairbank so eloquently played by Kevin Kline. 4/5 It is an underrated biopic, and it is a contender for Robert Downey Jr.'s best performance, he's probabily the only American actor to get a Cockney accent right, and he looked so convincing when he portrayed Chaplin as an old man. Plus, it was full of so many little cameos, as well as Kline, there was James Woods, John Thaw, Anthony Hopkins, Dan Aykroyd, Milla Jovovich and even David Duchovny!! ;)

Smokin’ Aces (1st view) – After the excellent Narc, Joe Carnahan’s third feature is a whirligig of gunplay, violence and frenzied camerawork. It reminded me in many ways of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but not near as much fun, and with a story that seems to be deliberately overcomplicated, plenty of style but little substance. Still, go along for the ride and don’t expect miracles, there’s quite a bit to enjoy here with some decent trust from the reliable Andy Garcia, Jeremy Piven and Ray Liotta – 3/5 Ride Lonesome (1st view) – 1959 western that sees lawman Randolph Scott transporting a murderer to the town of Santa Cruz, all the while followed by the killer’s brother, Lee Van Cleef. Cleef is by far the best actor on show here, yet he appears for just a few minutes near the film’s end, it’s shame as the film could have benefited from him being used more. James Coburn also makes an impression in his first film role. Enjoyable enough though, and at just under 90 minutes it never bores – 3/5

The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor - Enjoyable at times, but a mostly wanting movie. There were too many moments where the boundary between homage and plagiarism (at one point you'd expect Harrison Ford to walk in) was blurred. The plot was wafer thin with some truly ridiculous moments (yetis, anyone?). Maria Bello was a bad casting choice. She's a great actress, but completely lacks the warmth that Rachel Weisz brought to the character and the accent was all wrong. Luke Ford, who plays Alex, can't act for shit and I was rooting for the Mummy to finish him off. John Hannah provides comic relief and the link to the now very possible Mummy 4. I would have been more than happy to watch this on dvd on a rainy rain snuggled under a duvet. Fans of the franchise will love this though.
